May 2024 - 'East Ruston' or 'Book Titles'
'East Ruston' was our latest photoshoot to the fabulous gardens of the Old Vicarage and 'Book Titles' managed to stretch all our imaginations!
Some members concentrated on just one of these, others contributed to both.
One member even managed to combine both subjects in all 6 pics - a real achievement!
Enjoy them all . . .

I kept to books I owned rather than Googling up titles.
1 - "Tombland"
By CJ Sanson, features Matthew Shardlake investigator working for Elizabeth I in Norwich. The photo was taken in 'La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. It's one of the most visited cemeteries in Latin America, mainly because Evita Peron is buried there.
2 - "Churchill"
By Relman (Pat) Morin (multiple authors) about our great war-time prime minister. The church is 'St John the Baptist' built on a small hill in Aylmerton.
3 - "The Taming of the Shrew"
By William Shakespeare. The photo is of a Whitbread Inn sign, 'The Nag's Head' in St Leonards on Sea. In the late 1940s Whitbread had a promotion, you bought a beer you received a small metal replica of the inn sign. There were 154 in all and my dad managed to get to all 154 in an amazingly short time thinking back! BTW I checked, today the pub is 'pc' now has a picture of a horse's head!
4 - "The King and I"
Was Rodgers and Hammerstein's film and book of the music. It was based on the popular book by Margaret Landon, 'Anna and the King of Siam'. This is a selfie of me with a ruler.
5 - "The Tempest"
One of the last plays written by William Shakespeare. The picture shows the morning after the night before of the Storm Surge in Sheringham - December 5th 2013.
6 - "Hamlet"
By William Shakespeare, the photo shows, 'The Pigs' pub with sign in the hamlet of Edgefield., double whammy 'pigs' for ham - in a hamlet.

I wasn’t able to get to the photoshoot, but here are some I prepared earlier (taken in July 2023).
1 – Hydranger – Double Exposure in Camera
I can’t remember exactly how I achieved the black & white with blue effect.
2 – Lily with Brush Effect
f9, 1/500 sec, ISO-640. Cropped in LR, taken into PS and used an Impressionist Brush on 30% opacity & flow in white to create textured effect.
3 – Gate
f14, 1/125 sec, ISO-400. Masked the sky in LR and darkened as it was overexposed, upped the temperature on the foliage and path and added a dark vignette.
4 – Cosmos
f9, 1/1250 sec, ISO-800. Cropped and de-saturated a little in LR, white vignette added.
5 – I’m Trying to Sleep!
F16, 1/160 sec, ISO-1250. Light was low so high ISO, put through Topaz denoise, cloned out a distracting leaf in LR , increased clarity & texture and added a dark vignette.
6 – Cornflower
f8, 1/1000 sec, ISO-1250. Cropped in LR, put through Topaz denoise, dark vignette added.

1 - Black Beauty
This was taken at the animal sanctuary we visited on a photoshoot last year. The horse was a beautiful brown but for the purposes of the book title I wanted it to be black so I changed the whole image to monochrome then added the book title.
2 - On the Beach
I have lots of beach pictures so thought I would use one to illustrate the Neville Shute novel. This was taken on my recent holiday to Spain looking down on a beach from a nearby viewpoint. I could have found a view without people but thought the woman and child were in just the right place.
3 - The Bridge
There are several books called the Bridge but I chose the one by Iain Banks. This is of course not the Forth Bridge but it fits the title. The bridge is in Bilbao and was designed by the architect Calatrava. I was staying near it so took the opportunity to go out when it was lit up at night. It looks much more spectacular than during the day.
4 - The Waves
On my recent holiday there were lots of opportunities to take coastal shots especially when the waves were rough, so it seemed appropriate to choose a book called the Waves. Although the image is in landscape format I think it could be used as a book cover.
5 - The Sport of Kings
Dick Francis has written more than 20 books about racing so it was not difficult to find a title that fitted with my horse racing image taken at Fakenham Racecourse at a Point to Point. Racing is indeed often described as the Sport of Kings, so the title fitted the subject.
6 - The Shadow of the Cross
Although it might seem a bit macabre to photograph in churchyards there are some great photo opportunities. This is a composite of three images taken in a cemetery. It was a sunny day and the shadow of the cross on the tomb was falling across the grave. I used the face of a carved headstone and some flowers to complete the picture. I added extra canvas to make the book cover, then added an embossed text to complete the effect.

A really enjoyable photoshoot and haven't posted too many flowers as they could have been taken in my garden so more the individual gardens which are a joy...
1 - Entrance Gate
Into the gardens..very grand
2 - Water Feature
Tried a long exposure here but it wasn't too successful but impressive regardless.
3 - Water Garden
And fish pond very zen a nice spot to sit a while.
4 - Mediterranean Garden
Very rustic, palms and cacti.
5 - Happisburgh Lighthouse
This was a lovely surprise to see the hole in the hedge and Happisburgh lighthouse not easy to shoot as the hedge formed a tunnel and tricked the camera exposure !
6 - The Cafe
Love the tools and and decor here ...food was good too.

All were a bit of an experiment based around a visit to “SUE RYDER” shop in Fakenham investigating the behind scene processes sorting out the old books that come in for sorting. I might add I add permission to go in with my camera.
To link all the photo’s I happened to home in on a ‘Digital Photography’ book that seemed a good object to have in all the shots.

1 - “The Three Muscateers”
By Alexandre Dumas. I positioned three bottles of Merlot (I changed the labels to read Muscat) on a tier of stacking tables (tiers).
2 - “Death in Venice”
By Thomas Mann. I came across this drowned Gondola on a visit to Venice a few years ago.
3 - “A Clockwork Orange”
By Anthony Burgess. The workings of an old mantelpiece clock with an orange replacing the pendulum.
4 - “A Farewell to Arms”
By Ernest Hemmingway. The photo of the arms wall was taken on a visit to Blair Castle in Scotland a couple of weeks ago.
5 - “The Go-Between”
By L P Hartley. Here the green “GO” light is between the couple. I used a background of a tunnel taken in Remagen, Germany a few years ago, and added stock images of the couple and the traffic light. I added a lighting filter to the Green “Go” light for emphasis.
6 - “The Lady Vanishes”
A Hitchcock film based on a novel by Ethel Lina White. Bit cheeky this one – I used it in 2014 when our subject was Cinema Inspirations. Added a canvas look using Affinity's 3D effects.

East Ruston was a revelation – what fabulous gardens! If you haven’t been, you should – you will not be disappointed.
But the pull of our alternative subject was too much, so here are 2 flower pics from East Ruston and 4 Book Titles.
1 – Lilac Flowers
Striking colours of the flowers and stems, these were just asking to be photographed.
Lumix TZ90, 42mm, 1/160, f5, ISO 80.
2 – Tulip
Again, the ragged flower head of this tulip had to be recorded. Lumix TZ90, 63mm, 1/200, f8, ISO 80.
3 – "Old Age for beginners" by Clive Whichelow
Cropped from an image of a larger group of ‘oldies’ crossing the rail tracks at Sheringham during the 40’s Weekend, then posterized in Elements. The title and author added in Affinity Publisher. Lumix FZ1000, 400mm, 1/250, f4, ISO 125.
4 – "Excel Bible for Beginners" by Harjit Suman
Found in our bookcase, I couldn’t resist this one! Lumix FZ1000, 56mm, 1/250, f3.4, ISO 500.
5 – "The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman
Heavily cropped from a street scene taken in China, showing 3 generations with murderous looks, depicting Richard Osman’s title. Lumix TZ5, 62mm, 1/200, f4.5, ISO 100.
6 – "The Girl Who Played with Fire" by Stieg Larsson
Another inspiration from our bookcase, but this time the portrait was first edited with reduced opacity, then placed behind, and blended with, the lighted match shot, to create a slightly surreal effect to reflect the title.
Lumix FZ1000, 33mm, 1/125, f3.8, ISO 1600.

1 - Moby Dick
A Southern Right Whale surfacing. 70mm, 1/400 at f11, slight crop and some adjustment for the highlights on the waves.
2 - Murder on the Orient Express
A montage as last month. Three photos, then adjusted to give the desired effect.
3 - Swallows and Amazons
My usual stamping ground of Morston. Cropped out of a larger photo. Solarized (Photoshop) and some playing with colours, then vignette applied.
4 - The Dig
Archeologists at Vindolanda taken on iPhone last month. Used Lightroom preset to give the decolourisation/spot colour.
5 - The Silence of the Lambs
Photoshop to add the wolf to the shot of the lambs. Then Lightroom preset to give the false colours.
6 - A Kestral For A Knave
A 600mm zoom, but at 170mm for this shot. 1/1600 at f8 (ISO 1250, it was a miserable day). Selected the Kestral and increased the exposure, adjusted contrast to give desired look. The sky was then selected and exposure reduced, added a blue tint as the original was grey/white.

East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden was in full spring bloom on the day of our photoshoot and after all the wet weather we'd had we were blessed with a bright sunny day. The following images have been given the name of a book title, our alternative subject, as each one tells a story!
1 - "A Room with a View"
The old vicarage has spades of that! I added a garden view to add context and location to the other 5 detailed images. f/11.0. 1/320 ISO200 taken at 107mm.
2 - "The Colour Purple"
Amongst the spring colour of flowers were a number of variegated leaves reflecting the light and catching the eye. I love the purple colour and detail in the leaves and the little yellow flower resting in the middle. A couple of water droplets provided additional interest to this composition. f/7.1 1/320 ISO200 taken at 107mm.
3 - "The Secret Garden"
Always interested in the details in nature I took several pictures focussing on the inside of the flower. A kind of deep dive to find the secret within! I added adjustments in PSE 2024 and also added a canvas texture filter to add depth and contrast. f/7.1. 1/125. ISO200 taken at 95mm.
4 - "Romeo and Juliet"
'A rose by any other name'... The perfume of this gorgeous pink climbing rose opened the senses the minute you stepped through the open doors of the glasshouse. Set against a wall and in full sunlight this beautiful example was in full bloom. I wanted to capture its simplicity and beauty. f/5.0. 1/1000. ISO400 taken at 50mm.
5 - "A Curious Herbal"
Carpets of soft downy Borage/Starflower, a herb native to the Mediterranean. The chosen book title is a masterpiece of botanical art. Written in the C18th this was the first herbal published by a woman artist. I put the busy bee off centre to focus on the dream like flowers. f/7.1. 1/400. ISO200 taken at 135mm.
6 - "The Tulip"
An interesting book, apparently badged as being 'the story of a flower that has made men mad'! This image was taken from above using the LCD screen to take the shot in the centre of the frame. I removed the rather dark leafy background, replacing it with a simple black to add contrast and then used the B&W Colour Pop Red filter. This added depth and drama to the original image.

Having been to East Rushton several times before, I decided not to attend the Group's photoshoot but instead used images from the last time I visited back in 2020, especially as I hadn't got round to doing anything with them in 4 years - this was therefore a good opportunity to look back and process them. I have included as my first image a before/after shot, as thought members might be interested in what can be done using a Filter on some might say a rather uninspiring photo.
I have included two book titles using Violets from my garden a couple of weeks ago, and a panel of some of the Aurora images I took last Friday evening - what a wonderful experience that was.

Despite spending most of my waking hours with my nose in a book, I sat for ages unable to think of a single title!
And then I could only think of Dickens books, which I don't even like! But here they are.
1 - "The Beach" (Alex Garland)
Chesil Beach. No tweaking, just the shot as it was taken.
2 - "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" (Jules Verne)
Taken from the Yellow Submarine at Puerto Calera in Lanzarote. I experimented with the Spherize filter in Photoshop, just a tiny amount, to heighten the roundness of the porthole.
3 - "Night of the Iguana" (Tennessee Williams)
Taken in Costa Rica, in the daytime. Cropped and the colour balance adjusted in PS to mimic night.
4 - "Crime and Punishment" (Dostoevsky)
Taken in Assisi. Nothing done to it. (Did he ever get punished???)
5 - "Far from the Madding Crowd" (Thomas Hardy)
Taken at Cley. Nothing done to it.
And finally, just for a laugh ... a Puffin 😄. Farne Islands. Cropped.

Cropped.
